Fire Chief

The Leon Springs Fire Department (LSFD) seeks a highly qualified, experienced, and collaborative leader who is dedicated to public service to become its next Fire Chief. LSFD employs fulltime staff, part-time staff, and volunteer members, providing exceptional fire protection and emergency medical services to the residents and businesses served by Emergency Services District No. 4 (ESD No. 4) in Bexar County, Texas. LSFD operates in both city and rural settings and is responsible for ensuring a safe community by providing protection of life and property threatened by medical emergencies, fires, hazardous materials, severe weather conditions, and all other natural or man-made catastrophes.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of commitment to the safety of fire department personnel and the community members in which he/she has served and will operate with a strong, transparent, and inclusive leadership style that fosters a culture of respect and consistent accountability. The Fire Chief will have an in-depth understanding of modern fire service codes and trends at the state and national levels. The selected individual will have strong incident command skills and the ability and willingness to take command of incidents.

The Fire Chief will be involved and visible within the community both professionally and personally and will be a strong promoter of the Fire Department at the local, regional, and state levels. The Fire Chief will be a relationship builder who will establish a solid rapport with the LSFD Board of Directors and the Commissioners serving on ESD No. 4.

Minimum Qualifications

• Three years administrative, supervisory, and managerial experience in a career fire department on a command staff level at a rank above Captain.

• Associate Degree in fire science, public administration, or related field from an accredited college or university; or 15 years full-time fire service experience with increasing technical responsibilities and leadership and willingness to achieve Associate Degree within 24 months

• NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800

• TCFP Advanced Fire Fighter certification

• DSHS EMT-Paramedic Certification with five years of experience providing paramedic level patient care

• Graduate of an accredited fire chief academy program (e.g., Texas Fire Chief’s Academy)

• TCFP Incident Safety Officer

• TCFP Fire Officer IV

• TCFP Fire Instructor II

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in fire science, public administration, or related field from an accredited college or university

• DSHS EMS Instructor

• Experience managing wildland urban interface incidents

• Experience as a Fire Chief for a department similarly situated to LSVFD

• Live or be willing to relocate to within 10 miles of ESD 4 service area.

• TCFP Field Examiner
